Marie Claire Editor at Large Zanna Roberts Rassi on why sunglasses are more than just an accessory

Originally published on

While accessorizing with sunglasses is the easiest way to upgrade your outfit, we often forget that UVA protection is just as important as the style. In honor of National Sunglasses Day, AOL sat down with Zanna Roberts Rassi where she explains why sunglasses are more than just a fashion accessory and reveals which celeb is mastering summer style right now.

Zanna, who not only holds the reigns as Fashion Editor at Large of Marie Claire, is also a co-host of E!’s Fashion Police. In addition to her fashion endeavors, she founded the ultra-successful beauty line MILK Makeup back in 2016, which retails at Sephora and Urban Outfitters.

AOL: As a fashion editor and style expert, what do you look for when investing in a pair of sunglasses?

Zanna Roberts Rassi: You have to think about the UVA/UVB protection. If there isn’t that, forget about it. And obviously, you’re a stylish girl so you also want to think about the style and what suits you and what suits your outfit. You can really change up any look with a pair of sunglasses. Comfort is also very important; if you don’t have comfortable sunglasses on, you’re not going to wear them.

There are several common myths surrounding UV protection. Which is the most important to point out?

Many people believe that the darker the lens, the more protection you’re getting – and this is absolutely not the case. As long as you have the UVA/UVB protection sticker on the sunglasses, it’s going to protect you equal amounts if it’s a light or a dark shade – so don’t be tempted to pick up a pair of dark lenses thinking they are going to protect you. If it doesn’t have the sticker, it’s not going to protect you.

Whether it’s December or June, sunglasses are a season-less accessory in my opinion. What are your thoughts on wearing sunglasses regardless of the season?

It is so important to do that. The Vision Council did a survey and between 2pm-4pm (when most of us are outside) are the hours that UV rays are at the strongest and most damaging. So, rain, shine, sun, snow – wear your sunglasses. They look super chic anyway!

Which celebrity is mastering summer style right now?

So many! The Kardashians nail it with the sunglasses every single time. Somebody like Kate Bosworth wears sunglasses so well. And then you go back to the classics, somebody like Jackie O and you think about that shape sunglass. It’s insta-chic if you are wearing jeans and t-shirt and a great pair of sunglasses will elevate your look just like that!

Watch our full interview with  Zanna Roberts Rassi above, where she reveals which sunglass trends are a fashion ‘do’ and ‘don’t’ and the cute way she gets her kids to wear sunglasses outside!

Diplo recalls meeting Camila Cabello for the first time

Originally published on

Major Lazer has been around the world and back.

Diplo, Jillionaire, and Walshy Fire are the trio (founded by Diplo) that make up the award-winning EDM group responsible for hit songs such as “Cold Water”  featuring Justing Bieber and “Know Know Better” with Camilla Cabello.

In an exclusive interview with AOL, Diplo dished on meeting Camila Cabello early on and why Migos inspires him to work hard.

“I go every day, I was in the studio right after our show we did together in Denmark that’s no big deal. I’m in the studio every day with artists it feels like. I was inspired by Migos – they literally have a studio locked in every city they go to and just like do whatever they do,” Diplo told us in Chicago at Bacardi’s ‘Sound of Rum Sessions’ summer kick-off event, where model Olivia Culpo joined the celebration and Major Lazer took the stage.

This is the second time Major Lazer has partnered with Bacardi to connect island-inspired music to the Caribbean roots of rum. “We are allowed the freedom to express ourselves. It [the collaboration] works because we can both bring creative ideas and are able to speak freely and execute…It’s a gathering of all people that want to hear great music, have a good time, have some nice cocktails and do some dancing,” Walshy elaborated on the importance of big brands partnering up with musicians.

Camilla Cabello, who recently made history for having the most streamed song by a female on Spotify with her song “Havana,” has worked with Diplo on multiple projects together. Billboard confirmed last year that the pair has “over 20 unreleased songs together.”

“We met her really early on, she came to the studio in Miami and hung out the whole time. She was always invested in our brand. We took her to one of Walshy’s parties [and] she was like, “Wow,” Diplo said. “And by the way, that party [Camilla came to] was a Bacardi sponsored party called Rum & Bass…high energy dancing and bass to fans all over the world,” Walshy added.

Olivia Culpo reveals why inclusive sizing is important for pageants

Originally published on

Model Olivia Culpo stepped out on Thursday night in Chicago to celebrate the first day of summer at the Sound of Rum Sessions with Bacardi. While Major Lazer took the stage, AOL sat down with the former Miss Universe winner to discuss everything from her upcoming projects to her deep-rooted love for music.

“I love music so much. It’s such an important part of my upbringing. Both my parents are musicians. All of my siblings play music. I grew up playing the Cello my whole life and I love to sing. I really do enjoy music — it’s kind of a hidden thing that I like to keep to myself.”

From a new film with Bruce Willis coming out in September to her upcoming show “Model Squad” debuting on E! in the fall, Culpo who recently became a new aunt shows no signs of slowing down.

“I am designing for an upcoming [fashion] project. I can’t tell you too much who we’re collaborating with but yes it’s happening. It’s very exciting. My new movie with Bruce Willis is coming out August 31st and then “Model Squad” will be on E! in August or September. There’s a lot going on!”

Culpo, who made headlines for going from Miss Rhode Island to Miss USA to Miss Universe all within a year, is no stranger to comparison in the spotlight. With Miss America making recent headlines for scraping their swimsuit competition, AOL asked the former beauty queen why it’s important for major pageants to make strides in inclusive sizing.

“I think it’s important to include all sizes no matter what it’s for in the world There’s no one thing that makes somebody beautiful. Beauty is in all shapes and sizes, all different color skin tones, all different beliefs. I think that we are slowly getting closer to a place like that and hopefully these are the kind of steps that will help us get there.”

Kim Kardashian’s CFDA award proves that her success came full circle

Originally published on

Last night, the Council of Fashion Designers of American honored Kim Kardashian West with the Influencer Award presented by actress Busy Philipps. Receiving a CFDA is the highest honor one can receive in the fashion industry, but this year’s Influencer Award was the first of its kind. With her 112 million followers on Instagram and various successful ventures in the industry, there’s no denying that the 37-year-old, who once served as Paris Hilton’s personal assistant, has had her career come full circle.

After gracing her seventh Vogue magazine cover, Kim opened up about a former publicist who told her that landing a magazine cover would be unrealistic in last night’s acceptance speech.

“I mean, it was maybe seven years ago when I had a publicist and she asked what I—what were my goals, what were my dreams, and I said I just want to be on the cover of a fashion magazine, and she said to me, ‘Let’s get some realistic goals ‘cause that’ll never happen.’ And so, of course, I sent her my Vogue cover when it came out, an autographed copy, but so it’s really a trip to me that now I’m up here getting an award for fashion when it’s something that I’ve always loved so thank you so much for this. It means a lot.”

From pioneering the shoe subscription service ShoeDazzle back in 2007, to licensing deals with Sears and most recently her KKW beauty and fragrance line (which amassed $14.4 million in sales in less than five minutes), Kim poked fun at herself that she was shocked to win a fashion award when she’s ‘naked most of the time.’

“I’m kind of shocked I’m winning a fashion award when I’m naked most of the time,” she joked during her acceptance speech. “But this is seriously such an honor,” she continued, “so thank you to the CFDA for this award

While husband Kanye West was unable to attend the awards that took place at the Brooklyn Museum in New York City, sisters Kendall Jenner and Kourtney Kardashian were right by her side.

Adrian Grenier on saving our planet and how Arnold Schwarzenegger is helping him

Originally published on

We all know and love Adrian Grenier as Vinny Chase in HBO’s “Entourage”, and if you don’t, then you must recognize him from his cameo in Britany Spears’ “You Drive Me Crazy” music video. While Grenier has laid low on the big screen, it’s for a good reason that we all need to pay attention to.

After creating the Lonely Whale in 2015 to inspire people to take action in protecting our ocean environment, Grenier was named the UN Environment Goodwill Ambassador in 2017. With World Environment Day falling today on June 5, we spoke to Adrian Grenier exclusively to discuss everything from using his voice to advocate for reducing plastic use, protecting our marine life — and which celebrity friends are helping him along the way.

AOL:  Can you pinpoint a specific memory when it really hit you that you needed to bring awareness and become such a positive voice for the environment?

Adrian Grenier: I was lucky to grow up with a mother who instilled love for our shared environment early on.

Can you share a little bit of what inspired you to start the Lonely Whale?

I was inspired to found Lonely Whale alongside my producing partner Lucy Sumner with the hope that we could create empathy for our ocean, connecting those that never even have the opportunity to see the ocean to find new ways to connect. If you can’t connect you can’t care, and the oceans have so much need for our attention and our compassion and our empathy.

In your speech at last year’s World Environment Day at the United Nations, you said, “A lot of people know me from the roles that I’ve played on TV and in the movies, but the most important role I play is the role of one single human being – one citizen.” Can you expand a little bit on what you meant by that?

Oftentimes we glorify the power of celebrities and their ability to create change, forgetting that we – individual citizens – have that same power to create change inside each of us. That’s why my role as an engaged global citizen remains the most important role I’ve ever played. I view it as my duty to remind my fellow citizens that they share that power. It’s up to each us to realize our own agency and drive forward the change we need today for a healthy future.

We know you have a long list of celeb friends, are you enlisting the help of any famous friends to get the word out?

Have you been tagged yet?! I’ve teamed up with the UN Environment and a few of my friends to #BeatPlasticPollution in honor of World Environment Day. Celebrities from Aidan Gallagher to Arnold Schwarzenegger to Dia Mirza have joined me and the UN Environment to inspire others to ditch single-use plastics. This challenge has been accepted by over 65 celebrities with a reach well over half a billion. So AOL, I think it’s your turn… Tag, you’re it!

Jenna Dewan’s post-breakup style is chicer than ever

While most may spend the day in bed with a tub of ice cream and opt for sweats, Jenna Dewan’s response to a breakup is anything short of weary.

The 37-year-old actress, mother, and dancer has never looked better post-split from Channing Tatum after 9 years of marriage back in April. With her career at an all-time high, Dewan is in the middle of filming her hit NBC show “World of Dance,” gracing the cover of magazines and recently winning Humanitarian of the Year award at the St. Jude Hope & Heritage Gala.

From walking the red carpet solo at this year’s Billboard Music Award to her appearance at AOL Build, Dewan’s single style wardrobe is all about chic dresses and showing off a whole lotta leg. Just one week after announcing her split from Tatum on Instagram, Dewan shared a stunning beach-glam photo rocking a midriff-bearing top — thanking all of her fans for their support.

Whether it be rocking a sheer top by Cinq à Sept paired with a ruched leather skirt to an embroidered-lace flapper dress by David Koma, it’s safe to say Jenna Dewan never looked better. Check out our favorite style moments from Jenna in the gallery below!

Brad Goreski reveals why he loved Kate Middleton’s wedding dress

Originally published on

After interning at Vogue and getting his foot in the fashion door as Rachel Zoe’s assistant, Brad Goreski has made a name for himself styling a long roster of A-list clients such as Jenna Dewan, Leah Michelle and Sarah Hyland. From his famous commentary on E!’s Fashion Police to his chic Instagram account with nearly 500K followers, Goreski is undoubtedly an expert when it comes to all things style.

In celebration of Lord & Taylor’s new store opening on, we spoke to Goreski about what to wear for a summer wedding, why he loved Kate Middleton’s wedding dress and who his ultimate style crush is.

AOL: Aside from wearing white, what’s the biggest mistake guests can make when dressing for a summer wedding?

Brad Goreski: I think the biggest mistake guest can make for a summer wedding is wearing black. Another big no-no is that people don’t have their clothes properly tailored. A lot of men just buy off the rack and I think spending that little extra bit of money to have a tailor alter the hem of your dress or take it in is money well spent. It really helps to give an extra polish to your overall look.

Attending wedding after wedding can become expensive to keep buying new dresses you only wear once (especially after yo Instagram it.) What is the one color and silhouette that is worth investing in when it comes to summer weddings?

I think a really nice cocktail dress is great in a bold color. Maybe with a little bit of structure or shape to the skirt. I think that’s always the best way to go. If we are talking about Instagramming and photographs, as a red carpet stylist, colors and bold colors photograph really well — so something in a solid [color] is the best way to go, if you want to get a little more useful wear out of your dress. The one thing people will remember is the color but necessarily if it’s the same dress.

Lord & Taylor is able to offer affordable prices (especially with their flagship store on Walmart) but they also carry high-end designers, what is your favorite way to mix high-end pieces with more affordable brands?

The Lord &Taylor flagship that is launching right now on has over 125 really great brands. The really cool thing about it is it’s a full new website that is really beautiful. It carries everything from women to men and kids. You can get your accessories, your jewelry, your handbags and shoes on there. And the range of designers and prices are incredible.

Sometimes wearing a long dress to a wedding gets boring, I love mixing it up and opting for a jumpsuit. What are other ways to prevent yourself from looking like every other guest in the room?

I think the best way is to not get locked into just wearing a long dress. Just like you said, you can wear a jumpsuit, you can wear a smoking menswear-inspired tuxedo, you can wear a great wide leg pant with maybe some sort of embellished top.  I think that there is a lot of variety out there. You can even do a maxi-skirt or a circle-skirt with a nice blouse — there a lot of different ways to incorporate wedding dressing. And also, when you are doing that, you are buying and incorporating things into your wardrobe that can be worn again.

Whether it be a cool headpiece or a shorter dress, what’s your favorite ‘trend’ for the modern bride?

We were just talking about Kate Middleton’s dress and one of the great things about that gown that people responded to right away was the tailoring and the fit of that dress. She has that accentuated waist and then the hip pads that designer, Sarah Burton, added onto it to trick the eye into thinking it appeared smaller then it was (even though it was a really small waist.)

I think it’s really about focusing on the silhouette as well, again you don’t necessarily have to wear a big princess gown. That’s an avenue and a road that a lot of people like to go down to fulfill that wedding fantasy, but I also think we are seeing a lot of brides do very simple slip dresses or a Carolyn Bessette esqué very simple column gown. A lot of bridal designers have been showing a slip-on mule or flats with a wedding dress. Brides have been having custom made sneakers to wear with a jumpsuit for the reception. It’s whatever you feel like you will be the most comfortable in for the day.

I always love watching your commentary on E!’s Fashion Police. Which celeb’s style would you say no one can ever agree on?

I am a huge fan of Rooney Mara style and everyone loves to go at me about my love for her. I love her so much and always will!
