NYFW: BCBGMAXAZRIA creative director on his ‘rough glamour’ Fall ’18 collection

Originally published on AOL.com

There are two words that Bernd Kroeber wants us all to know when thinking of his BCBGMAXAZRIA Fall/Winter ’18 collection — “modern” and “romantic.”

The newly appointed creative director (who has worked for the label for 10 years) debuted his second collection on Friday during New York Fashion Week. “The title is ‘rough glamour’ and I really wanted to focus on the new BCBGMAXAZRIA. This is the fusion of modern and romantic. We really explored the contrast of femininity, masculine, hard and soft, playful and strict, but at the same time in a very effortless manner – because that’s what BCBGMAXAZRIA stands for,” Kroeber said to AOL Lifestyle.

The collection fell nothing short of creative. The brand partnered up with five female artists, including fashion illustrator Blair Breitenstein, to create artwork that was incorporated into the venue. The clothing offered a mix of masculinity and femininity and embodied the aura of ‘rough-glamour’. From cropped biker jackets styled over a tiered ruffle gown to a structured jacket paired with high-waisted cargo pants, the contrast between playful and strict was evident.

When asked how the brand has changed the most since he first started in 2007, Kroeber said, “we really want to focus on the fusion of modern and romantic. It is the 21st century and we want to focus back on BCBG’s essential roots, which is effortless fashion.

“We embrace beauty, we embrace women. This is why we collaborated with those 5 artists – BCBG always stands for creativity and women’s empowerment and the women’s movement. It’s a 30-year-old amazing brand. It has such relevance and this is where we go deep down and embrace our culture. “

Bernd Kroeber has brought back being able to get all dressed up, without the effort.

NYFW: Dennis Basso celebrates 35 years with glamorous runway show

Originally published on AOL.com

Anyone that has been in business for 35 years is obviously a master of their work — especially in an industry where everything is constantly changing. Today, Dennis Basso celebrated 35 years of his namesake fashion label with a glamorous runway show held at the St. Bartholomew’s Church in Manhattan.

The seventy-look collection featured everything from embroidered shirts to wide-leg crepe pants and an array of dresses that were turned up a notch thanks to holographic fabrics. Furs and gowns (what Basso is known best for) stole the show. The fur hoodies, embellished red carpet dresses and dramatic mink coats that hit the floor represented every woman’s dream closet.

We caught up with the fashion veteran pre-show to discuss everything from how fashion has changed since he first started his career to what’s coming next for the brand.

You’ve been in business for 35 years and in the fashion world that’s considered a lifetime, how have you seen fashion change the most since you opened your business?

I think it has evolved. Today, women are more experimental. They are wearing things that they might not have worn a few years ago. What you wore in the evening was only for the evening, what you wore in the day was only for the day, and now we’re taking a little bit of day and a little bit of evening and mixing it all up together. The modern woman has changed, it’s just amazing! 35 years doesn’t seem like a long time if you’ve lived it, but it is a long time. We’ve changed and I think people are having more fun with fashion.

What was your inspiration for creating your 35th-year anniversary collection?

The inspiration for this collection was the women that I’ve dressed over the past 35 years. I took some of those best looks over the years and developed them. I brought them forward into what the modern women today want. It was great going into the archives and developing. This was my first real step into ready-to-wear, daywear and sportswear. This is my version of what casual wear is.

Do you have a favorite piece in the collection?

That’s like saying which is your favorite child because everything has a meaning. There’s a magnificent coat that Hilary Rhoda is wearing. It’s a combination of different colors done in a geometric pattern. It’s one of my favorite pieces.

From an affordable line with QVC to fragrances and bridal, what’s next for the Dennis Basso brand?

I think we are really going to go further and try to create a brand with price points that are a little more popular. We have the collection on QVC which is very well-priced. Maybe something in the middle between QVC and where we are today. I think that’s an evolution that can come forward.

Harley Viera-Newton on fashion and Cardi B

Last week, the American Heart Association held the Red Dress Collection™ runway show presented by Macy’s. Marissa Tomei, Kate Walsh and the Bachelorette’s, Rachel Lindsay were just a few of the celebrities who walked the runway to support women’s heart health during New York Fashion Week and American Heart Month.

The show was DJ’d by ultra-cool girl, Harley Viera-Newton, who has modeled for major brands such as DKNY and has graced the pages of Vogue. We caught up with the DJ and model-turned-designer backstage to chat about HVN (her namesake fashion label), heart health and music.

From modeling to DJing to becoming a newly established fashion designer, how do you manage those different roles and why is it important for you to support causes such as the American Heart Association?

It’s doable up until fashion week and then it becomes pretty crazy. I was showing and selling all day today from 8 am until I had to leave to come here – but you know, you find a balance. Usually, the DJing is in the evening or in the late afternoon so it works out. This week is definitely not lots of sleep but that’s okay!

I think it’s really important to shed light on an issue like heart disease and just let people know that it is a huge threat to women. I think that this day is about letting women know they need to take care of their heart and be aware of that. You can work out not just for the way you look, but also for that way that you feel and the way that your heart feels.

What’s your go-to music for playing at a fashion party? Are there any new artists you’re loving right now?

I never create the playlist before I arrive, because until you see the venue and feel out the vibe of the event, it’s kind of hard to predict where it will go. I think today is going to be a lot of fun, a lot about female empowerment and I’m going to throw in some important female artists in my set for sure.

I’m obsessed with Cardi B so I just plan on stalking her through fashion week. I DJ’d something with her last week and got to see her perform and it was amazing.

You have such a diverse and unique resume, are there any mentors that inspire you?

Oh my god, so many. I have so many designer friends that have helped me sort of in this new stage of my career and the emotional support is the most important thing – you know, just having friends like Adam Selman, Jonathan Saunders, designers I’ve loved for so long who can sort of help me through these early stages.

It’s clear that HVN is inspired by a vintage aesthetic and an effortless girl on-the-go. She can wear it to the office and go straight to a party. Who is your dream person to dress?

Rihanna, but I feel like that’s everyone’s dream girl — but honestly, just any women who wear it and makes it their own. I love seeing how different girls and different women style the dresses. One girl will wear it with combat boots, another girl will wear it with heels or sneakers or layer it with a pant. There are just so many ways to style them so that’s really rewarding for me to see how it can be translated so many different ways.

HVN is known for its prints and silhouette, what type of prints are you looking forward to wearing this Spring season?

I have a couple of new prints that I’m really excited about but I am about to launch so I’m not going to talk about them yet. We try to keep the prints under wraps until they are in store. There are some good ones coming!

HVN has been spotted on everyone from Jennifer Garner to Selena Gomez and Kelly Ripa. Who was the most shocking to see wear your designs?

All of them! It’s crazy that these incredible women are finding my dresses and supporting. Everyone is exciting. I remember when I first saw Jennifer Garner wearing a dress, I couldn’t believe it. I just got tagged in a photo of Brie Larson who is so gorgeous – she looked amazing! It’s always shocking and exciting.
